Living deep in the Louisiana swamp is like living on
another planet. In the swamp land roads are non-existence. The pirogue is the
chief means of transportation. The pirogue is a small, narrow, wooden boat that
is propelled by pushing off with a pole placed on the bottom of the marshy
bottom of the bayou. The pirogue is so unstable, that if you are chewing tobacco
and decide to shift the cud to the opposite jaw, the movement would probably
cause the pirogue to flip over. Most Louisiana swamp rats are placed into the
pirogue while they are babies and taught to pole it as most babies are taught to
walk by being placed in walkers. It is a common joke that Louisiana swamp rats
have "web feet". Also the food of the La. swamp Rats has a taste of
its own. It is said that they will eat anything that don't eat them first. But,
after a visitor taste the Louisiana cooking, they certainly will come back for
seconds, and probably bring their Whole Family.
