#333 The Slide

Work and fun seem to blend together on a farm. During the winter plenty of firewood was used in the wood burning heaters, stove, and fireplace. So, it was the children's job to gather, haul, and stack the wood. The fun of the chore was to hitch old Pete (Dads Mule) up to our home-made slide and head to the woods to gather all the fallen limbs. I had no problem getting helpers, because words can't describe the fun of riding over the bump and gully's as fast as Old Pete's poor old legs could carry us. And you can believe, me being a young mischievous boy, I kept that mule at top speed. Sometimes I would arrive back at the house with only half the load and short a helper or two. It didn't phase me, it only gave me a better excuse to head back and romp and rave with old Pete some more.  Those were the Days!!
