If trouble was around, my cuz Dave and
I wasn't far away. One time Dave and I were playing in a neighborhood watermelon
patch and before we realized it, the deadline for us to be back home had past.
And, sure enough, Dave's dad had left him and instructions to get home the best
he could. We lived in Hammond, LA and Dave lived in Brookhaven, Mississippi.
Well, Dave and I had both had borrowed a watermelon and he wasn't about to part
with his. Dave's only means of transportation left was hitch-hiking, so off he
struck up the road with a watermelon under his arm. It was such a funny sight, everyone
who saw him was laughing. Later that month when we heard from Dave's family, we
found out that Dave not only made it home safe, but he was sitting on the front
porch eating watermelon as Unc. drove up!
